LEAD RIGGER — DATA CENTER CONSTRUCTION

GL Skilled Staffing Services

Position Summary

GL Skilled Staffing Services is seeking a Lead Rigger to direct hands-on rigging and equipment placement on a large data center construction project. This position leads an assigned crew in safely unloading, moving, positioning, and setting heavy mechanical and electrical equipment, including chillers, generators, transformers, pumps, and prefabricated equipment modules.

The Lead Rigger is responsible for executing approved lift and equipment-moving plans, maintaining load control, and protecting personnel and equipment.

Reports to: Rigging Foreman or designated Superintendent.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead daily rigging activities and assign tasks to crew members within the approved work plan.
  • Review lift plans, equipment drawings, manufacturer instructions, and placement requirements before starting work.
  • Confirm load weights, centers of gravity, approved lifting points, and rigging configurations using verified information.
  • Select and inspect slings, shackles, spreader beams, chain hoists, and other rigging accessories appropriate to the assigned work.
  • Interpret rigging capacity information, accounting for sling angles, hitch configurations, and manufacturer limitations.
  • Remove damaged, unidentified, or unsuitable rigging equipment from service.
  • Direct load attachment, controlled movement, positioning, landing, and removal of rigging.
  • Lead equipment moves using approved machinery skates, hydraulic jacks, hoists, and other moving systems.
  • Verify that travel paths and landing areas match the approved plan and remain clear of obstructions.
  • Coordinate with crane operators and designated qualified signal persons using established communication methods.
  • Maintain exclusion zones and keep personnel clear of suspended loads, pinch points, and equipment travel paths.
  • Protect equipment finishes, sensitive components, and surrounding building surfaces during handling and placement.
  • Conduct task briefings and reinforce safe work practices throughout the operation.
  • Stop work when conditions differ from the approved plan or safe load control cannot be maintained.
  • Report equipment damage, unsafe conditions, and changes requiring review to the Rigging Foreman.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of industrial or heavy-equipment rigging experience.
  • At least 2 years leading rigging crews or directing equipment-moving activities.
  • Demonstrated qualification for the specific rigging work assigned, subject to employer verification.
  • Ability to interpret lift plans, rigging diagrams, equipment drawings, and placement layouts.
  • Strong knowledge of rigging hardware, working load limits, load balance, and load-control practices.
  • Experience handling heavy mechanical or electrical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with rigging crews, crane operators, and field supervision.
  • Documented signal-person qualification when crane signaling is assigned.
  • Ability to pass a practical rigging assessment appropriate to the project scope.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous data center or other critical-facility construction experience.
  • Experience setting chillers, generators, transformers, and prefabricated mechanical or electrical modules.
  • Recognized rigging certification appropriate to the assigned work.
  • Experience with machinery skates, hydraulic jacking systems, and equipment moves in restricted-access areas.
  • Familiarity with manufacturer requirements for handling high-value equipment.
  • OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour Construction training.
  • English/Spanish communication skills.

Working Conditions

This is a hands-on field leadership position requiring regular work in active construction areas, around heavy equipment, and at elevated locations. Duties may involve prolonged standing, climbing, bending, and handling rigging gear. Essential duties must be performed safely, with reasonable accommodation where applicable. Project-required shifts and overtime may apply.
